New bettas
I bought a new betta on Saturday. He's a gorgeous little white veil, with a sort of fleshy/orange face. After much deliberation, I decided to name him Quintus, because he is the fifth in the current betta lineup and I've always had a thing for Latin.
While picking him out, I came across a mustard gas male on the same shelf. (See this article if you don't know what a mustard gas is.) I resisted the urge to buy him right then, because I only needed one betta to put in with Hugo in a divided 5.5 gallon... But by Sunday I couldn't resist the urge to buy him any longer and went back for him. Andy seems to have adopted him -- even though he lives with me, Andy apparently vicariously owns fish through me. He came up with a detailed history for the mustard gas: He's a cowboy, with a six-shooter that shoots betta pellets. He once tried to rob a bank, where someone set him up and tried to kill him with mustard gas, so when he got out he swore revenge and is now one badass betta. Thus, Andy named him "Mustard Gas McNasty." I didn't entirely approve of that name, so I changed it to Maverick McNasty. It's a very fitting name, as he's very fierce and keeps attacking the bottom of his tank.
